What are CareChoice rates?

CareChoice rates are a set of provider pricing rates recognised under the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (formerly known as the NDIS Price Guide). They reflect the actual cost of delivering quality disability support services, including worker wages, on-costs, overheads, and quality assurance.

The term "CareChoice" broadly refers to a transparent pricing model that allows participants to compare provider rates against the NDIS price limits and make informed decisions about how their funding is spent.

How do CareChoice rates differ from standard NDIS rates?

The NDIS sets maximum price limits for each support category — these are the highest rates a registered provider can charge. The actual rate a provider charges may be:

  • At the NDIS price limit — the maximum allowable rate
  • Below the price limit — a discounted rate negotiated with the participant
  • CareChoice-aligned — a rate that reflects full cost-recovery including award wages, leave entitlements, and administrative overheads

It is important to understand that lower rates do not always mean better value. A provider charging at or near the price limit may be able to invest more in worker training, continuity of staff, and quality support outcomes — all of which directly benefit participants.

Why do rates vary between providers?

Several factors contribute to rate variation across NDIS providers:

  • Location: Remote and very remote areas attract higher rates due to travel and workforce costs.
  • Time of day and day of week: Evening, overnight, Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday supports attract higher rates under the NDIS Pricing Arrangements.
  • Support intensity: High-intensity supports (e.g., complex nursing care, behaviour support) attract higher rates than standard supports.
  • Registration status: Registered providers must comply with NDIS Practice Standards and Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements, which carry costs.

What does "NDIS Rates Accepted" mean?

When a provider states they accept NDIS rates, it means they bill at or within the NDIS Pricing Arrangements limits — so you will never be charged more than the NDIA allows. This provides important consumer protection.
